Rant on Resident Evil Requiem

Some things I didn't like about Resident Evil Requiem.

I should start by saying that this is a very good game that I recommend to everyone. The gameplay is excellent, the atmosphere is spot-on, and the story is decent (for a Resident Evil game). However, there are a few things I didn't like.

WARNING: SPOILERS.

**1. Mix of genres.**

This game combines survival horror sections (like RE 7) with action sections (like RE 4). At first, I thought this was a good formula, since the action sections were brief and provided some relief from the tension of the survival sections. However, as the game progressed, the survival sections took a backseat to the action sections, which became long and tedious at times. I think future Resident Evil games would benefit from eliminating the action segments or limiting them significantly. There are plenty of good action games, but not so many good survival horror games, and that’s where the Resident Evil franchise shines.

**2. Armed zombies**.

The previous point brings me to this. In this game, there are zombies that fire guns. Please, Capcom, I thought that after RE 6 we’d all learned this isn’t a good idea. It’s extremely implausible and, at least for me, breaks the immersion.

**3. Lack of realism**.

That brings me to this point. I know Resident Evil isn’t a realistic franchise, and I’m willing to take plenty of leaps of faith when it comes to what I’m willing to believe. A zombie survives two shots to the head? Leon gets up unscathed after a 20-meter fall? Leon survives an RPG explosion just two meters away? Leon races through the ruins of a city on a motorcycle at full speed and nothing happens? I’m willing to buy into all those things for the sake of the story. After all, it’s a video game, not a documentary. But there are things that are outrageously implausible for no reason at all.

For example: At one point, we pass through a room in the Asylum where corpses are moving along conveyor belts to be later shredded. In that room, we can see literally hundreds of corpses being processed. How could there be hundreds of corpses in a two-story Asylum? It’s impossible. And it’s not at all necessary for the story.

Another example: there’s a section where Leon walks through about five train cars that are suspended in the air. A train that’s supposedly been like that for years. Without falling. How is that possible? And why did they decide that’s acceptable? It’s as if the developers couldn’t care less about realism.

I think Capcom should have people dedicated exclusively to flagging these implausible situations during development.

**4. Removing ammunition from weapons**.

This is something they should have fixed a long time ago. If I have a fist gun and buy a second, better one, I should be able to remove the bullets from the first gun before selling it. Or at the very least, when I sell the original gun, I should get back the bullets that were in the magazine. It’s a minor detail, but it bothers me.

**5. Level structure**.

This game has a level structure that repeats across many Resident Evil titles: First, we start in a large mansion where we have to unlock new rooms, solve puzzles, and return to areas we’ve already explored. This first area is always very well designed and interconnected, and it’s clear that the level designers spent more time on it than on the others. Eventually, we leave the mansion, and at this point, the environments become much more linear. And finally, we end up in the lab. Why does every Resident Evil game have to have a lab? Even in RE7, which takes place in a house in the middle of nowhere in Louisiana, Capcom felt the need to include an underground lab. Come on!

Rant over. Despite my previous points, this is a magnificent Resident Evil.
