What has caused the major uptick in hiking/outdoors tourism in the last 5 years? Was it COVID?
I live in an area that tourists visit for hiking, backpacking, state parks, national parks, waterfalls. We have a lot in the area. I grew up here. I work in the outdoors sector here. There were always the bubbles in the summer, and bubbles in the winter for the ski park, and these waves of tourism helped support the town. But these last few years all of the places that used to secluded or something only locals knew about are becoming inaccessible due to overcrowding. Absolutely trashed lakes. Noticable erosion from high levels of foot traffic and people going off trail. Meadows that don’t bloom anymore from foot traffic. Garbage everywhere. Illegal parking. Injuries every day. It’s not locals behaving like this, it’s tourists. They don’t respect the area, they’re indignant. They often act like they’re superior and are owed something. It’s really hard to work with. I try to keep an open mind and keep myself check, I want to make peoples time here BETTER, but damn! I cannot believe how crowded it is. #hiking #activity
