What are some high paying technical careers involving complex systems and operations?
I’m looking for suggestions on high paying technical careers that I may not have considered.
For a while, I was seriously considering becoming an airline pilot. After spending about $10k and 50 flight hours, I realized I didn’t want to take on $100k+ in debt, spend years as a CFI, and potentially wait until my 30s to reach a six figure income.
Instead, I went into nuclear operations. The pay isn’t quite at the level of a major airline captain, but it’s still excellent. Depending on qualification level, overtime, and position, nuclear operators typically make around $150k–$250k. It’s not the $300k–$400k+ some airline pilots make, but I’m very happy with my career choice.
My educational background is in Mechanical Engineering, so I have a strong technical foundation and could be competitive for a lot of different roles.
Im someone who really enjoys understanding complex systems, operating and troubleshooting equipment, and working with both my head and hands. I don’t mind physical work, uncomfortable environments, or extensive classroom/training.
I love nuclear operations, but the rotating shift schedule is something I probably won’t want to do forever. Long term, I’m interested in careers that could realistically reach at least ~$200k, with potential for ~$300k+ through overtime, specialization, or management.
What are some “hidden” careers that fit this description? I’m thinking careers similar to pilots, nuclear operators, and other high responsibility technical operators.
I’d appreciate any suggestions from people in industries I may not even know exist. #business source
