⚖️ The United States sanctioned International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye on August 18, freezing assets in US jurisdictions or touching the US financial system, the State Department said.

Akane, a Japanese judge, has led the court since March 2024. Seye is a Senegalese senior trial lawyer. The measures are part of the Trump administration’s wider campaign against the Hague-based court.

📰 The administration says the ICC has exceeded its mandate by pursuing matters involving US and Israeli personnel. The ICC responded that sanctions against judicial actors undermine the rule of law. 🇺🇸

The sanctions can limit dealings with US-based entities and access to financial services; Al Jazeera reported they are due to take effect on September 17. The Court’s legal mandate remains in force, but it relies on states and institutions for cooperation and practical support.
