In 1835, a man named **Richard Lawrence** attempted the first assassination of the U.S. resident **Andrew Jackson**.

Lawrence approached President Jackson as he left a funeral. He pulled out a pistol, aimed at Jackson’s chest, and… misfired.

He pulled out a second pistol (yes, he had two), aimed, fired again… misfire.

At this point, Andrew Jackson, 67 years old, furious, and armed only with a cane, proceeded to **beat the would-be assassin within an inch of his life** while bystanders pulled him off.

Later tests showed both pistols worked fine, odds of two misfires were estimated at 1 in 125,000.
