West Coast Roadtrip

So I’m planning to do a west coast roadtrip during the summer from June 2nd to June 10 or 11. I already bought my ticket to San Diego since I want to start my trip there first. Is there any advice that is helpful to save money either hostel stays that are recommended or when is it the best time to rent a car or take the Amtrak. Any advice would be helpful
