Hay Storage and Feeder Combo

Has anyone built a combination hay storage and feeder for cows? We want to store the hay adjacent to the winter pasture but also make it so our dairy cow can eat the stored hay bales. The benefit of this is not needed to move the bales often (or at all) and she can have free choice feed. We would built it big enough to store 8 bales or so with solid walls except for a portion for her to access hay.
I've done a little research and not found much information about this idea (possibly because it's not a good idea). Has anyone done something like this? If so, any practical tips?
