First time gardeners seeking advice for planting spring and summer crops
Hello! My wife and I are doing our first raised bed this year since we finally got a back yard. We have an 8x4x2 raised bed were going to do the square foot gardening method in. We are in zone 9a. We are making a plan to plant spring crops but also want to put summer crops in the same bed later on.
Our last frost is on March 1st on average so we plan on starting most spring stuff indoors 2-3 weeks before March 1 to get them ready to plant outside the first few days of March. The issue we have is some plants take 60ish days to grow like potatoes and carrots. By that time, our summer stuff will need to be in the ground like tomatoes and peppers and corn. Also, the lettuce and spinach will still be in the ground so I guess you just let them die off or cut them for compost?
How do you go about planning things so that you don't need a whole second bed? When do you know when a plant's life cycle is done and you can plant something in its place? Lastly, after spring do you need to refertilize the bed a bit for stuff like tomatoes? Thank you all! #activity source
