I'm doing a bath remodel in the master bathroom in a townhome. The shower that was in there previously had shower walls installed that were about 72" in height and applied over drywall with liquid nails adhesive used to glue the shower walls on. I tore those out and now I'm stuck on what I can do next as the back wall is a shared wall that is double dry walled. I didn't know this until I tore the shower walls out and started to look at tearing the drywall out when I noticed the double drywall.
I looked into it a bit more and I think that is done to reduce noise and the 1 hour burn rule. I initially thought I could tear the top layer out but I think that is not only screwed to the 2nd drywall and studs but I would suspect it is also glued.
Has anyone done anything similar? I was going to just go ahead and just use shower walls again but I do want to see if there is any opportunity to put up tile.
The pony wall as you can see in the picture was actually just drywall as well. On the inside facing the shower they had use a shower wall as well but that didnt cover the area just outside the shower. So drywall was in the splash zone and naturally degraded and molded over time.
