Something is digging all over the yard and eating all my plants' roots. I know we have voles, and have been working on getting rid of them, but this is something else. The tunnel entrances are huge and the raised tunnels are too. I found a dead cotton rat in the front yard this winter during an abnormally long freeze (3 or 4 weeks straight). I've tried cayenne pepper, castor granules, flooding the tunnels and filling with gravel, corn meal/ baking soda (they loved it, it did nothing), baiting traps with peanut butter and seeds, then slim jims, then bacon smoked with a match before setting the trap. I caught nothing. I tried electronic traps and caught nothing and tried have a heart traps but only caught skunks, possums, and raccoons. I got a Rattinator trap but whatever it is would get in, empty the bowl of food, and then let itself back out!
I found a new tunnel entrance today near the chicken run. All chicken feed and water is put away/ dumped every night. I put down cayenne pepper and a castor oil granule deterrent around these plants two days ago. Whatever it is, it's eaten most of my native yarrow in this spot and half my milkweed. I tried flooding the tunnel but after 30 minutes, the water was still going down. What am I dealing with and how do I deter it? #home source
