Bunnies and Easter

There are people selling bunnies on street corners today and probably through the weekend. Everyone here is always so supportive of bunnies and animal welfare so I’m sure you’re familiar with this but given how many sale pop ups there are today I figure it’s worth bringing up!

A lot of prep is involved in bringing a bunny into your home and no pet should ever be an impulse buy. People often don’t consider how much work bunnies are and when they get tired of them they dump them somewhere where they see wild cottontails. They suffer and die terribly that way because domesticated and wild bunnies are not the same.

Please remember bunnies, especially baby babies, are not starter pets or ideal pets for kids. Their bones are as fragile as birds’ are, and they inevitably get injured by even the most careful or loving child. As prey animals, they often hide the pain or terror by simply shutting down which gets mistaken as obedient or tolerant instead of suffering. They need space to run and climate control, as they can have a heat stroke with temps above the mid-80s. They are social and need companionship, and they will chew things you don’t want them to because that’s what bunnies do. We know now that the backyard bunny days of the 90s were so wrong, but the good news is we can do so much good now that we know better.

Please report any roadside sales to your local police NON-EMERGENCY line or Animal Services. If you know someone considering getting a bunny, please encourage them to foster or adopt from our local rescue, Orlando Rabbit Care & Adoptions. They have a list of resources on their website including exotic vets, diet, and other resources that can help anyone who has or is considering a pet bunny. When you foster they can loan you supplies, when you adopt your bunny is already spayed or neutered and vaccinated for RHDV2, which is like Ebola for bunnies. There’s a foster-to-adopt program too so you can see how well you click with the bun you’re interested in and experience the day to day life with one.

If you have any bunbun questions let me know! I volunteer and have had rescue bunnies for several years. They are quirky, charismatic and sassy pets. They remind me of cats with their midnight zoomies, demands for attention, getting into trouble and delivering plenty of stink eye when you refuse their orders. When they’re sick or injured it’s an emergency and luckily we have some really good exotic vets and emergency vets that will see bunnies too in Orlando.
