We need to stop using garbage collectors as the “don’t end up like this” example.
It’s weird that some people use garbage collectors to scare kids into studying harder, as if it’s some shameful failure. They’re the reason our streets aren’t overflowing with trash.
My point is you don’t have to want that career to respect it. The real measure of a respectable job isn’t whether it looks impressive on LinkedIn. it’s whether society would notice if nobody showed up tomorrow. And garbage collectors pass that test pretty easily(more on this in a really good read called ‘bullshit jobs’ by David graber.)
