Though best-remembered via the subsequent Nat King Cole-Nelson Riddle best-seller, “ Pretend ” was initially recorded and charted in this instrumental treatment by the Marterie band.
The original single was issued on Mercury 70045 - Pretend (Douglas-Parman-LaVere) by Ralph Marterie & his Orchestra, recorded October 1952.
The order is the interesting part. Marterie's band got "Pretend" onto Mercury 70045 and the charts before the Nat King Cole-Nelson Riddle record became the one people remember. An instrumental leading a song that later lived on a vocal is a strange little reversal. Did the trumpet carry the line the way Cole's voice later did, or was it more of a section feature?
