Carl Ravell & His Orchestra - So Rare - 1937
“Carl Ravell” was a recording pseudonym sometimes used by American violinist, vocalist and bandleader, Carl Ravazza whose 1937 version of " So Rare " may be the earliest recording of the song, although it is unclear whether it was the first released version. Other 1937 recordings of “So Rare” (Guy Lombardo and Gus Arnheim most notably) helped boost the song to the No. 1 position on the weekly “Your Hit Parade” radio survey. It was the 1957 Jimmy Dorsey hit which remains most familiar to later generations.
The original 78rpm single was issued on various ARC labels - So Rare (Sharpe-Herst) by Carl Ravell (The Singing Maestro) & His Orchestra, vocal by Carl Ravell, recorded in NYC June 4, 1937

Ralph Marterie - Pretend - 1952
Though best-remembered via the subsequent Nat King Cole-Nelson Riddle best-seller, “ Pretend ” was initially recorded and charted in this instrumental treatment by the Marterie band.
The original single was issued on Mercury 70045 - Pretend (Douglas-Parman-LaVere) by Ralph Marterie & his Orchestra, recorded October 1952.
