Turning a neglected wooded hillside into a small flower farm
A few years ago most of this hillside was basically just overgrown woods and neglected ground. I’ve been slowly turning the usable parts into a small flower farm while keeping most of the land wooded. Right now I’m growing around an acre of flowers and vegetables, keeping two goats who do a surprising amount of the brush clearing, building trails through the woods, and slowly adding infrastructure as I can afford it. I’ve also got a little greenhouse/aquaponics propagation station and off-grid solar setup. The flowers are the main focus. Lots of zinnias, amaranth, millet, Job’s tears, cosmos, herbs and other stuff for bouquets and dried arrangements. I’m trying to build the farm in a way where everything overlaps a little instead of having one single purpose. There’s still a ridiculous amount of work left, but it’s been pretty satisfying watching pieces of rough hillside turn into actual productive space. Peter and Cupcake, the goats, would probably argue that this is actually their farm.
