Motivation isn’t like being suddenly in the presence of a muse, or some powerful spark of inspiration. It’s the result of getting started and continuing regardless of how you feel.
People talk about motivation like it’s something that you either have or don’t have, or like it’s something you have to get hit by.
I think most of us just don’t actually have motivation most of the time, unless we know for sure that something we’re doing will reward us on some way, like if we’re doing something for survival or some pretty immediate payout. When we know that not doing something won’t kill us, or that the payout is either not guaranteed, minimal, or really far out time-wise, there may be almost no motivation whatsoever to do it even if there is some upside.
I’ve found that if I just get started with something, then the motivation is sort of borne out of doing that thing. I don’t enjoy doing the dishes, but once I do get started I always end up feeling motivated to keep going. There’s no spark driving me to start, so I have to force myself to do it, and then the motivation kicks in due to my lack of interest in leaving things that I start unfinished.
You can try to psyche yourself up and find a reason to get going, but sometimes you just have to get started. You have to say “I don’t feel like doing this at all,” and get started anyway. Even if you do it with a bad attitude, it doesn’t matter. Just start. Do it bored, frustrated, tired, annoyed, whatever you feel, but just get started. The motivation will show up. #conversation source
