‘Reading the room’ can mean a lot of things depending on the context, but generally it can be understood as recognising the atmosphere you find yourself in, the customs, the unspoken rules, the flow of conversation and adapting to it. Here are some common situations in which this may apply:
1. If you are in a group of people and feel deliberately left out of the conversation, do not speak up louder and try to interrupt, but instead politely exit. Don’t try to stay if you are not welcome, it shows desperation and low value (I wish I knew this in high school, lol) 2. Never point out someone’s insecurity in public, especially if it’s physical like acne or a scar. Yes, they are well aware it is there and they can feel your eyes burning into them. So just pretend you don’t notice and carry on with what you were doing. 3. Know the red-lines. Certain topics may fly with some groups, but not with others. For example, everyone knows you wouldn’t talk to your mother how you talk to your best friend. Similarly, if you talk dark humour, politics or religion with group A, don’t assume group B will be the same. And if they don’t bring it up, don’t push. 4. Know if someone is interested or is being polite. An interested person will put their phone down, lean forward and listen to what you are saying. They will not only answer your questions, but counter with questions of their own. Their eyes will focus on you. A polite person will give you quick smile, but their eyes will dart around looking for an exit. They will give short answers to questions and not counter with questions of their own. Know this and allow them to exit gracefully. 5. This may be controversial, but I’ll say it anyway. Every group has a leader, the alpha, the top dog, whatever you want to call it. This isn’t necessarily the strongest, macho person but it’s the person everyone shuts up and listens to when they are speaking. It’s the person who controls the flow and topics of conversation. The person who controls the invites to events. Don’t get on their bad side. They may show no reaction in the moment or even laugh, but they will remember and quickly outcast you.
