I have about half an acre of land thats currently overgrown with raspberry, nettles etc. after the previous owners stopped using it as a horse pasture a couple of years ago.
Im looking to get two or three small livestock that would keep the brambles and bushes at bay. Aside for that all Im looking for is good vibes and maybe some company. Im not after anything specific in terms of meat production etc.
Im in Norway, the winters are long and dark but not particularly cold (0 to -15 C). We get a lot (!) of rain all year round and in winter we can get quite a lot of snow if its a cold year. The area in question is on a slope and somewhat rocky, but very overgrown with grasses, shrubs and weeds. The animals will be free range all year (as is traditional here) but I will ofc be building a proper shelter. I have experience with keeping dogs, horses and various small pet type animals, but livestock is new to me. But the valley is full of farmers and help will be provided when needed. Im aware my area is small and Im prepared to buy extra feed. We do not have any bears or wolves here, but we do have huge eagles and foxes, so any very small animals are in danger of being snatched up and taken away.
So far Ive been thinking of alpacas or maybe some native breeds of goat or sheep. Would love to hear peoples thoughts on the different options and any other suggestions for animals ! #home source
