An epic and detailed biography of the American physicist who led the U.S. effort to develop the atomic bomb during World War II, only to find himself suspected as a security risk in the 1950s. Produced by the BBC. It was broadcast in the U.S. in 1982 as a part of PBS' Masterpiece Theatre.
In Part One: J. Robert Oppenheimer meets and decides to marry the hard-drinking, much-divorced Kitty, although his friends and relatives dislike her.
The series is expertly cast and depicts Oppenheimer's wartime role as head of the weapons laboratory of the Manhattan Project, during which he was under constant surveillance by the federal government because of his association with Communists. It culminates in a U.S. Atomic Energy Commission hearing in 1954, in which Oppenheimer is stripped of his security clearance. For education, entertainment, enlightenment and inspiration.
