Mold in Basement. What next? I found mold in our basement…

Mold in Basement. What next?

I found mold in our basement on the paper side of fiberglass batting in the ceiling (see pictures) that has caused one of our floor boards to break (I didn’t make the connection with the broken floor board and mold until after it became more apparent in the basement. Fabric that’s been exposed for a long time will get green film over it, but it takes a long time to happen.

I **hired a mold remediation company to do an inspection. I know mold companies are known for being shady. What should I know going in?**

I’m expecting an expensive problem and I’m trying not to spiral, especially since I have asthma and this has been a hard year. We just got a dehumidifier, but we’re trying to figure out why there’s so much humidity. I was line drying clothes there (oops) but other things may be in play. We’re hoping to figure out the moisture issue so it doesn’t become a problem again.

Misc info:

\* Our crawl space is small and has a vapor barrier.
\* I have an AC guy coming to do a tune up and make sure it’s working as intended. He’ll also check if our dryer vent is clogged.
\* There’s a broken downspout that needs fixed that may be contributing to this issue. It goes into the ground and a hill, and we can’t see the other side.
\* The basement windows do get condensation.
\* Our interior caulking on the upstairs windows may need redone because it’s starting to crack.
