How do you get over anxiety from a bad experience at a previous job?

I’m interested in hearing from people who have had a bad experience at one company and then struggled with anxiety about it happening again.

One of my previous roles ended with me being put on a PIP and eventually pushed out, and I still find the experience difficult to make sense of. I joined a marketing agency on a fixed term contract without a marketing background. They had originally preferred someone with experience, but hired me because they liked me and my willingness to learn. I received very little training and had to figure a lot out myself. What confuses me is that I passed my three month probation after only one month and received a lot of positive feedback for the first 2 to 3 months. Then, seemingly quite suddenly, I was put on a PIP.

There were also some things that made me feel unsupported. A colleague I was supposed to shadow often ignored my requests for help, another colleague called me "clueless" for asking questions early on, and a director who had interviewed me and initially been very friendly suddenly became cold towards me. I’m naturally quite reserved when I first join somewhere and take time to feel comfortable, but I’m generally friendly, avoid workplace drama and don't tend to get involved in anything controversial. So I’ve never really understood whether I genuinely underperformed, wasn't a good fit, or whether there were other factors going on that I wasn't aware of.

The experience left me with a lot of anxiety around work. I became hyperaware of whether people were happy with me and worried that I was secretly doing something wrong without being told. The interesting thing is that my current role is completely different. I’m now in corporate development/M&A, I’m doing well, and I have a supportive, non micromanaging manager, good colleagues and the resources I need to succeed. It’s been a genuinely positive experience.

But I’m worried that when I eventually move companies again, I’ll somehow end up in the same situation. I’d really like to understand why situations like this happen, how you can tell the difference between genuinely underperforming and being in a poorly managed environment, and how you stop one bad experience from making you anxious about your next job.

I’m also curious whether this is more common in certain industries or cultures. My previous role was at a marketing agency, which felt quite culture and personality driven, whereas my current environment feels much more structured and performance focused. Has anyone experienced a similar transition between companies or industries and found that their experience was completely different?
