Backpacking Trips Don’t Start At The Trailhead

I saw this article in a Facebook group and I thought it was a fascinating point. Backpacking is only possible because of modern infrastructure and technology. Without cars, roads, and stores, it would be a very different experience. I suppose these aren’t strictly necessary to walk with a pack on your back. But they are a big part of the journey and the experience.

I liked this quote, “Backpacking depends on a broad landscape of roads, services, institutions, and rituals. These liminal spaces serve as transitions into and out of the wilderness experience. Backpacking is not just a trek through the wilderness. It is a journey through the hidden geography that surrounds the trail.”
