I’ve been working at a small company through a temp agency since November, and I really liked the job. I’d seen a lot of people come and go, and I never understood why as the work was easy and it paid well. I saw myself growing there and genuinely believed I had long-term potential with the company.
On March 12, I was offered a permanent position, and I was honestly so happy I teared up a bit. I told my manager I felt like I truly belonged there.
The next week, some personal stuff happened with my family and I didn’t get a lot of sleep. On Wednesday, while mixing dental molds (a task I had mostly automated at that point), I found myself nodding off a little while reflecting on the previous night. My boss came in, asked if I was okay, and I said I was, just said I was tired.
A week later, I was called in to speak with my manager. He brought up the brief nodding incident and then told me that my April 1 permanent hire date was being rescinded — though I wasn’t technically being fired. I calmly explained some of the personal stuff I had been dealing with.
For context, in December I had also been required to take a drug test, which came back clean, and I had started a new medication for my epilepsy around the same time. It did make me tired, and I wondered if that’s why I seemed “out of it.”
Then today, my temp agency called to say my assignment is ending because “work is slowing down.” That doesn’t make sense to me — why offer me a permanent position if work is supposedly slowing down? They even let go of a bunch of other people recently.
I at least want to go back and have my managers explain why they offered me a permanent position and then rescinded it. I canceled my Affordable Care Act insurance expecting to get on their plan, and my premiums have gone up this year, so this is a real hit.
I’ve worked through temp agencies before, and I’ve seen people let go for reasons that seemed completely arbitrary — sometimes just because a manager was having a bad day. I feel blindsided and discouraged. I finally thought I had found a job I could grow with for the next 10 years, but apparently not.
My manager said I should have called out the day I was tired, but I was just trying to maintain good attendance. Isn’t it a meme that managers still want you to come in no matter what?
I'm just so what the fuck is the point at this point. I'm tired of giving 110% at jobs and it not meaning shit. I tried calling my boss and he pre blocked my number as my buddy's phone was getting through while my phone went straight to voicemail, though he didn't answer.
