🌲 The Trump administration moved ahead Tuesday with a proposal to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which has restricted road building, logging and other development in inventoried roadless areas of national forests.

The U.S. Forest Service filed the proposal and a draft environmental impact statement for public comment. The agency says ending the nationwide rule would give local managers more flexibility to address wildfire risk, insects, disease and forest-health work.

The rule has covered roughly 30% of National Forest System land nationwide—about 59 million acres by the Agriculture Department’s estimate. Environmental groups said rescission could put old-growth forests, wildlife habitat, water supplies and recreation areas at greater risk. ⚖️

Rescinding the rule would not itself approve any particular logging operation or road. Individual projects would still be governed by forest plans and require project-specific review under applicable environmental laws.

The proposal is now subject to public comment and environmental review before the Forest Service can issue a final rule. 🏞️
