Overflowing septic drained: is there any way to make the area after draining safe and sanitary again?
Our septic system is failing and we didn't realize it until we last had it drained, last year. We've gotten referrals and quotes for a new system and have been waiting for a couple guys to free up space in their schedule, we're rural so finding good service people is difficult. In the meantime we had it drained again but apparently it was extra bad in an unexpectedly shorter timeframe than before and the soil churned up on top smells worse (digging over a box of shit is never great for the first week or so but it rained a lot this year and we got it drained as soon as we saw the signs).
How do we get the soil to be safe and sanitary to exist around again while we wait for the new system to be installed? We have dogs so just leaving as it is and avoiding the area is impossible, unless we fence it in. Can we spread something like lime into the soil and let dry (as recommended after floods)? The area does not get any direct sunlight and it's a moist but not humid area (redwood forest, Norcal). It's starting to be spring here now but just barely. #home
