And I think I've managed to make it work. This is a kumiko panel (asa no-ha) but it follows the shape of what I have since learned is a hyperbolic paraboloid.
From what I can find nobody has done this before, I've found some cylindrical kumiko that is bent after being made and one chap who made a sphere, but no compound curves like this. It was pretty obvious from the start that the reason might be because it's so difficult to do, but I'm in the lucky position of being on a 12 month furniture making course so I was able to dedicate over half a year to getting this to work, and I needed all that time!
It's not a project submission as yet because it is part of a furniture piece so I'll do a full post with construction pictures in the future, I was just so excited about how it came out and wanted to share.
