I was fired for taking home leftover food from my job
Last week, a classmate recommended a part time dishwasher and cleaner position at a small restaurant near my campus dorm. I only work after operating hours. My job is to wash cooking equipment and mop the floor before closing.
Many customers are students who leave large amounts of food on their plates. I saw pieces of meat with only one bite taken and entire portions of untouched rice. Because my shift starts after business hours, I do not receive free staff meals.
I struggle to afford food, and I hate seeing items wasted. I began selecting clean untouched portions from the plates before throwing away the rest. I took those portions home for dinner. The other employees saw me and said nothing, so I assumed my actions were acceptable. This routine continued for several days.
Yesterday night, the manager approached me as I finished my shift. She asked about the plastic bag I had. I honestly explained that I was taking the leftover food home for dinner. She became upset and warned that I could contract food poisoning. I told her that I had been doing this for days without any issues. That made her more angry. She added that eating customer leftovers violates health rules and creates a legal liability for the store.
I apologized and explained my financial struggles. She listened, but she maintained that my actions were a major violation. She took the plastic bag from me and handed me cash to purchase a proper meal. She then gave me my final wage payment and instructed me not to return for future shifts. #business source
