Which city is the best home base for travel?
I'm thinking Munich in Southern Germany. It has some of the highest wages in Europe allowing for sufficient disposable income to spend on travel.
By car you can reach the Alps and Northern Italy within hours for a long weekend.
It has a major airport in the heart of Europe meaning you can visit all of this diverse continent within a two hour flight for ~150 USD round trip. There might be some even cheaper options available if you use Lufthansa blind booking or one of the many budget airlines.
The airport offers direct flights to four continents and is serviced by low cost long haul airlines like Saudia or the Chinese carriers. Lately, there have been a ton of offers to Asia for 500 USD which would cost you twice as much from smaller airports.
What other cities worldwide offer a similar combination of beautiful surroundings, diverse destinations a few hours away by car, cheap short haul and long haul flights? I can only think of Zürich, Switzerland.
