The Early Church Fathers saw the deeper meaning of the soldier piercing Our Lord’s side. As Eve was created from the side of the sleeping Adam, the Catholic Church was created from the pierced side of the “sleeping” Christ, who is the Second Adam and bridgroom. In the double outpouring from Christ’s side are the two sacraments of divine mercy: the water of Baptism which cleanses us and the blood of the Eucharist which gives us new life in grace. These two essential sacraments form the foundation of the mystical body of Christ, ie the Catholic Church.
