My favorite wine is a 2L bottle of Yellowtail Cab Sav, let me tell you why…
College is a rough time. Everyone is flailing and trying to figure themselves out. For me personally, it was somehow one of the best and worst times of my life all at once.
I was lucky enough to find and live with a group of people who were like me. For the first time in my life, I learned that it was okay to be who I was, that there were others who had experiences similar to mine. I had been lost for a long time, and I finally felt like I was home.
We drank more than we should have, as many college kids do. We did some stupid shit and occasionally got into (minor) trouble. But we also had the most in-depth, soul-bearing 3am conversations I’ve ever experienced. The catalyst for all this? More often than not, Yellowtail Cabernet Sauvignon.
This past weekend I had the joy to reconnect with an old friend from that time. They came over to my house and we sat for hours, just talking and drinking - you guessed it - Yellowtail cab sav.
Did it smell and taste like grape juice mixed with hand sanitizer? Yeah. But the moment it touched my lips I was transported half a decade back in time. All of a sudden, the world around us was much smaller, with two twin XL beds, string lights, and a pink/blue mandala tapestry from Target. My friend had bleach-burnt hair and I was wearing the sweater I wish I still had.
Now, I’ve expanded my pallet a lot since college, but I still have yet to taste another wine with the power of time travel.
In that moment I realized I had forgotten something important. Wine is about more than just tasting notes, pairings, regions, and vintages. It’s about the people you drink it with, and the memories you make, or perhaps lose, together.
