⚖️ Federal judges in Boston and Chicago have cleared the way for the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for nationals of South Sudan and Myanmar, also known as Burma.
The rulings on August 7 affect about 232 South Sudanese nationals and roughly 4,000 people from Myanmar, according to Reuters reporting carried by Al Jazeera. TPS had allowed eligible recipients to live and work in the United States while shielding them from deportation.
TPS is a temporary, country-based protection for people already in the United States when their home countries face armed conflict, disasters or other extraordinary conditions. It does not itself provide permanent residence or a path to a green card. 📄
The decisions followed a June Supreme Court ruling that limited lower courts’ ability to block TPS terminations. People who lose TPS may still pursue any separate immigration relief or lawful status for which they qualify, but those without another basis to remain can become subject to removal.
