Single Issues vs. TPBs?

I know this question has been asked to death at this point, but I’m trying to gather more info/advice.
For some context, I’ve always been a nerd, but comics have always been an empty pocket in my utility belt. I haven’t read a whole lot of comics, just a few here and there, and they’ve mostly been indie books rather than superhero runs. I love Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, The Teen Titans, etc. but for whatever reason I never took the time to sit down and read the comics. Flash forward to this past year or so, and I’ve slowly come to realize that I LOVE comics. Strips, books, you name it, I’m all over them. I’ve been drawing since I was in pre-school and I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist, and I’m currently at art school pursuing illustration. The other thing you need to know about me is that collecting is in my blood. I’ve always liked to say, “it’s not hoarding if my stuff is cool.”
ANYWAY, over the past few weeks, I’ve been frequenting a local comic book and game store near my college’s campus, and it’s been a great experience going with friends who are into the same nerdy stuff I am. The dilemma I’ve been faced with, however, is whether to go for single issues or trade paperbacks. I’m not swimming in cash or anything, but I have enough to work with where each could be feasible. I want to actually READ what I buy, as well as collect. I’ve looked at the DC Compact editions that everyone seems to be divided on, and as much as I enjoy how uniform spines are, I don’t think I would enjoy reading them. I love the collectibility (NOT whether something will resell, I couldn’t care less about how much a book is worth) of single issues, especially with the variant covers available from artists I really admire, but from a financial standpoint, I can’t get the feeling that trades would be smarter out of my head. I also think I prefer the feel of holding and flipping through a single issue over a trade, but there are always exceptions I suppose. I currently have about the same amount of single issues as I do trades in my collection.
I’m looking for any advice any of you would have on this. I really appreciate anything you guys have to offer. What makes the most sense for someone who’s just getting (back) into comics and who is starting with the heavy hitters? Thanks!
