Old things weren’t “built to last” - you just see a miniscule fraction of them still around

The old houses you see standing today weren’t the standard house. Most were rickety pieces of garbage that fell apart after 10-15 years. The ones you see today were well-made and they weren’t made on a cheap budget.

The same for appliances. The vast majority of old appliances were garbage, unsafe, and died after just a few years of use. The fact that a small fraction of old appliances are up and running today does not reflect that old appliances in general were built to last.

Cars? Old cars are death traps. And the engines needed constant work. I can run my modern car for over 250k miles doing little more than changing its oil and other necessary fluids. The typical old car needed major work in its engine less than 50k miles in. If it lasted for 100k it was a beast.
