Me F(21) about to graduate college and go to grad school, but my mom still treats me like I’m completely incapable and it’s starting to really get to me.
She constantly criticizes me and says things that are honestly just disrespectful. Recently, I told her I was helping with a conference and instead of being supportive, she said I was just going to be my “usual shy self” and told me to “actually be helpful.” She’s also told me before that I’m “not good for shit.”
What really pushed me over the edge was when I was on the phone with my grandma and she started chiming in aggressively just to criticize me. It was embarrassing and made me feel like a child in front of someone else.
The thing is, this isn’t new. We even went to therapy about this in December, and she apologized and said she would change, but nothing actually has. It’s always the same cycle: she says something hurtful, I get upset, she apologizes, and then it happens again.
Now she’s texting me being really nice and saying she loves me, but it doesn’t feel genuine because her behavior hasn’t changed.
At this point, I feel like I’m at my last straw. I don’t even want to talk to her because I’m tired of feeling embarrassed, infantilized, and constantly judged.
Has anyone dealt with a parent like this? Did creating distance help, or is there a better way to handle it? #relationships source
