How the Xbox One Was Finally Hacked After 12 Years
After more than a decade of being considered “unhackable,” the Xbox One has finally been compromised at the hardware level using a new exploit called Bliss.
The interesting part here is how it was done.
Instead of a traditional software exploit, this attack targets the boot ROM in silicon using precise voltage glitching:
- Two carefully timed voltage drops on the CPU rail - First glitch skips memory protection initialization - Second glitch hijacks control flow during a memcpy operation
This effectively breaks the entire chain of trust at the earliest stage of boot.
Because the attack targets the boot ROM (burned into hardware), it’s:
- Not patchable via software updates - Capable of running unsigned code at every level (hypervisor, OS, etc.) - A rare example of a successful real-world fault injection attack against a modern console
For context, the Xbox One’s security model was heavily hardened compared to the Xbox 360, with layered protections and a tightly controlled boot chain. #technology #hardware
