The most emotionally intelligent thing you can do is let people misunderstand you

Everything we talk about here is about understanding and being understood. Communicate better, explain your feelings, clear things up. But I think a lot of us are quietly exhausted by it. I used to rewrite texts five times so nobody could take them the wrong way. I'd lie awake replaying a conversation, planning how to explain what I "really meant." If someone thought badly of me, it felt like an emergency I had to fix right now. And here's what finally hit me: other people's opinion of me is built mostly out of their own moods, their own past, and whatever kind of day they're having. I can't control that no matter how perfectly I explain myself.

Some people will misread you even if you're clear, kind and honest. That's not a communication failure. That's just being a person among people. The day I stopped chasing every misunderstanding, I didn't become colder. I actually became kinder, because I had energy left for the people who were really trying to understand me. So how much of your life are you spending trying to be understood by people who already decided who you are?
