In 1976, F1 driver Niki Lauda was involved in an almost fatal crash, in which he suffered severe burns to his head and hands and inhaled toxic gases that damaged his lungs and blood. While in hospital, he was also given the last rites. He only missed 2 races and finished 4th in his first race back
