Hi everyone I’m currently a senior in college so I graduate soon and I’m starting to be more reflective since I’m graduating soon.
One thing I have always struggled with is building a social life and friendships. During middle school I had n friends till 8th grade which was only 3 other ppl. Often times I found myself alone with no one to talk to or unable to build deep connections.
It was the same in highschool. I had a couple of ppl I did talk to but it was very surface level friendship. What made me reach this realization was my highschool graduation where everyone was celebrating with their friend groups. I realized outside of one other person I had no one to celebrate with.
I tried making a change in college, freshman I had no friends outside of one person from high schoo. I was busy focusing on transferring to a better college so I didn't find it worth it to invest into my social life.
Sophomore year I transferred into my dream college and I made subtle changes to my social life like joining some clubs but overall still awkward.
Junior year is when I truly did more progress with friends and asking ppl to hang out, texting more and being less nervous. I made some friends and strengthens some relationships.
However as a senior I realized I never had a big friend group.i would say my social circle is very 1:1. Like I have some friends but they are all separate from each other if that makes sense. It’s like I have friends for different versions of myself. And I’m wondering if my approach is wrong. From what I’ve seen online and in college the norm is do friend groups instead on 1:1 relationships. I want to know if this true and how to achieve this and if it’s too late for me since I’m graduating college. And I grad before most of my friends .
I just don’t understand what is normal and thriving social life. I grew up in a bad home enviorment and faced negativity during k-12 so my foundational social learning is very damaged and I feel disconnected from ppl.
In total I think I have about 4 at max 6 friends. I can introduce myself to ppl but it never goes past the acquaintance stage to friend stage.
I will admit I have trouble inviting others to hang out with me or intiating first due to fear or rejection and ostracized. But in the last year and half I’ve been working on that fear and have made improvements.
Plz be honest in ur responses to me on my approach to socializing. I’m trying to learn how to be better socially so I won’t be alone in my whole adulthood. I am comfortable doing stuff alone : solo traveled, lived in major cities, events, happily. But I don’t always want to be alone. #relationships source
