I got a Grizzly G0656PX jointer off Facebook marketplace for $700. The owner definitely didn't know how to use it and / or didn't take particularly good care of it.
The beds were completely out of alignment, some of the carbide inserts needed rotating, and the machine shook horribly upon start up and took a long while to spin down.
The first two I easily fixed with just a bit of patience. The final problem I didn't feel confident tackling, and while the shakiness left a slightly less than perfect surface, it was more than good enough to fix with the lightest of passes with a planer.
That is, until two days ago when, mid push, the entire cutter head stopped moving despite the motor clearly running.
Uh-oh.
The belt had finally given out, not surprising as it was fifteen years old and my garage has been over a hundred degrees for several days.
I ended up ordering a PowerTwist belt for $35. Though I was intimidated, the process of putting it on was actually quite easy. It took me about an hour but honestly it's because I'm a fairly weak lady and slipping the belt on under proper tension was a long process of trial and error.
Now the machine starts up instantly with no shake, slows down much quicker, and there is no chatter marks on my stock.
Just thought I'd share, perhaps you've also been putting off much needed maintenance that is actually within your ability to manage. #diy source
