Planning my 5 month route through SEA
Hi everyone,
I'm 19 yo (m) from Germany and currently planning my first 5 month solo backpacking trip through SEA (early february- early july).
I already did a 3 month interrail trip through europe last year, so I gained some great first experiences. But this time it'll be solo and much longer. I'm very excited since the flight and return flight (both to/from Bangkok) are already booked, so that I'll start in around 2 weeks (early february).
I'll book a hostel for the first few nights and then want to be spontaneous. The only frame is my budget (max. 1000 euros a month (I hope to spend even less)) and the booked flights.
But nevertheless I would like to have a rough plan. So after a lot of research I got this result and would love to hear some comments, critics or suggestions from more experienced travellers.
So I'll explain my thoughts:
Because I want to avoid the burning season (march- mai?!), I think it's best to start in the south and visit Laos/northern Thailand in the end. So I will start with island hoping in southern Thailand and visit Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and Singapore first.
Normally I want to avoid flying at all (not because I'm scared, but because of environmental reasons and for better travel experiences) (the flight to Bangkok will be my first flight ever) but I think in this one case its easier for me to fly back from Singapore to Bangkok. So I don't spend too much time seeing the same places while travelling back in the north and still have enough time to enjoy the other countries. Then I want to visit Cambodia (Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh) and take the train through Vietnam (Ho-Chi-Minh-City, Hoi An, Hanoi, Ha Long Bay) before I'll travel through Laos (Luang Prabang, Vientiane) back to Thailand (Chiang Mai) to Bangkok where I'll fly back to Germany early july. But I'm wondering because of the visas and if it's possible to cross the border from Vietnam to Laos without flying at all. I can't find exact information about that. I wanted to use visa on arrival but it seems they are only available in airports.
So if you have critics or comments I would like to hear them. I don't expect anyone to plan this trip for me, I did a lot of research by myself. I just want to hear if I missed something or maybe there are aspects that you can only know once you've been there. Or additionally suggestions.
