What’s the most unforgettable moment you’ve ever had in the wilderness?
I will start with mine.
One of my favorite fishing memories happened at our summer cottage in Finland.
My dad noticed that one of the lures behind the planer board didn’t seem to be swimming properly, so he asked my friend to reel it in and check it.
A few seconds later, my friend said, “It feels really heavy.”
My dad had no idea there was a fish on the line. Thinking the lure was just dragging, he calmly said, “Just keep pumping and reeling.” We never even slowed the boat down.
Then, right beside the boat, a truly massive zander appeared.
For a few seconds, we just stared at it in disbelief. Then the hook came loose, and the fish disappeared.
The three of us stood there in complete silence.
To this day, my dad always starts by saying he’s forgiven my friend for that zander—even though it wasn’t his fault. Around us, he’ll forever be known as the “the Zander Releaser.”
