Disney, ABC and eight ABC-owned television stations sued the Federal Communications Commission on August 18 to halt an unusually early review of their broadcast licenses. ⚖️
The companies say the FCC is retaliating against ABC’s editorial and news decisions in violation of the First Amendment. The FCC says broadcasters must operate in the public interest and has linked the review to an investigation of alleged employment-law and FCC-rule violations.
The licenses normally would not have required renewal until 2028 at the earliest. FCC rules allow an early renewal call when the agency finds it essential to an investigation; the stations may continue operating while the proceeding is pending. 📺
The lawsuit asks a federal court in Washington to block the early-renewal process. The case puts the FCC’s broadcast-licensing authority and ABC’s claim of unconstitutional retaliation before the court. 🏛️
