Popularity is not an indicator that something is “good”
Just using this as an example, but I saw a conversation the other day about a very popular artist with the initials TS. Someone said she was “mid” (hate that term btw) and another person responded by saying that her selling out stadiums is proof that she isn’t. Well, I disagree. I actually think that would be more indicative that she is in fact “mid”. Someone that can be accepted by the masses doesn’t need to be anything other than just that, acceptable. Not taking a position on her specifically, or saying that she is or isn’t good. More speaking to the logic behind that persons reasoning. Most very popular things are not necessarily the “best” versions of those things. Something more polarizing would attract a much more niche following.
I think that is why pop music in general is so popular. There’s really not much substance to it. It’s in the middle of the spectrum, where many people are. Not necessarily bad, but “Mid”. Another one that comes to mind is Marvel movies. They really aren’t that great. Yet, they are arguably the most popular form of cinema over the last decade.
Many people don’t like to think too hard or feel too much. So yeah, it makes sense that “majorities” would be attracted toward mediocrity. Because that is what’s presented to them and it’s easy to take in, at least when it comes to entertainment. Among other things.
