Breakaway civilization is decades ahead in technological advancement.
The lowly plebs only get to use the old tech.
An entire society exists that is invisible to you. Much like the everyday life experiences of third world peoples are to you. Out of sight, out of mind.
Ever see those old photos with people having smartphones and people assume time travel?
Nope.
Advanced tech has been around for awhile.
We only get glimpses of the elvin elite, and most think they are aliens. It's not the aliens making secret deals with our world leaders, it's the super advanced human society with ancient tech and esoteric knowledge.
