A ferry travelling from Kyrenia, northern Cyprus, to Taşucu, Turkey, capsized on Sunday after taking on water, triggering a rescue operation. 🚢

AP reported that the catamaran carried 259 passengers and eight crew members. Many were rescued and some were taken to hospital; Turkey’s ambassador to Nicosia said there were casualties, but gave no number.

The Cyprus Mail said Turkish Cypriot coastguard boats, a rescue helicopter and other vessels were sent to the area north of Kyrenia. It cited the city’s mayor as saying 270 people were aboard.

The Kyrenia–Taşucu crossing is a regular sea link between northern Cyprus and mainland Turkey. The cause of the water ingress, a final casualty total and the vessel’s condition had not been established in the initial reports. 🌊
