Pro Tips: How to not get scammed in Turkey

My partner and I went to Turkey Sept 2026 and almost every single day there was a scammer trying to get us. Some honestly felt unavoidable, and some were actually unavoidable. Turkey and its history is AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL, I still recommend visiting just for this alone. But if you are a “nice guy” you will 100% get tricked into a scam. You have to be okay with walking away and ignoring people.

One thing you should realize is to most you are not a welcomed guest, but a welcomed wallet.

Here are some tips I recommend:

\- 90% of cold approaches will be from price gougers

\- If there’s no price tag or they take out that damn calculator, you’re going to get scammed

\- “Special Price” is ”tourist tax”

\- The taxi driver’s “family restaurant” is going to be a $200 meal just FYI

\- Always bargain if there’s no price tag, ALWAYS. And don’t be afraid to walk away.

\- If you take Istanbul ferry, use the self-service kiosk in your language. DO NOT let someone help you. They’ll use their sleight of hand to put your balance into their card

\- If you order food, and they give you the wrong order, say something. Restaurants will commit “food fraud” to have you pay more for cheaper items. If they don’t want to honor their prices, don’t touch the food and very quickly leave.

\- Try eating in less tourist areas

\- Always use Rideshare apps. Make sure taxi ends the trip BEFORE YOU GET OUT.

\- Ask your hotel for guides and events. They’ll have set prices, despite being high, I could not find a better deal (please recommend if you know)

To some, these may seem obvious, but alot of people still give random people the benefit of the doubt.
