🗳️ Kazakhstanis voted Sunday in the first election for the country’s new single-chamber Kurultai, created under a constitutional overhaul that took effect in July.
The 145-seat chamber replaces the former Senate and Mäjilis. Its deputies are elected from one nationwide constituency by proportional representation, and their terms are five years.
The pro-presidential Adilet party was widely expected to win a large majority. The March referendum that created the chamber won support from more than 87% of participating voters, according to the Central Election Commission.
The vote comes as inflation and tax increases have fueled public discontent, while press-freedom groups have raised concerns about cases against independent journalists. International observers were due to present preliminary findings on 24 August. ⚖️
