Is the only way to combat social anxiety, awkwardness, cringiness, embarrassment, and shyness to basically own up to it and act like it doesn't matter?
My entire life so far, I'll be 25 soon, is that I mask so that no one sees the part of me that makes mistakes, that stutters, that talks over people because I'm not waiting my turn to talk because I get too overstimulated, when I'm shy, awkward, embarrassing, and cringe.
I mask because I feel shame for being awkward and cringe. Who wants to be that? It makes me feel on edge. Like sometimes I want to die from how awkward I can be. And then I ask myself if I feel the same way when others are awkward. And not so much. And then I realize that I am purposefully being harsh on myself because I feel like I need to if I want to learn on how to not be so cringe. But I feel like all of the pressure to not be cringe is what causes me to slip up anyways.
What I want to say ends up not going as expected because I'm scripting in my mind how it should go. And instead of actually allowing the conversation to flow naturally, it's in a forced masked state. And with all that pressure, I fail, and I feel ashamed. And it makes me think if I make myself feel shame for being cringe, shy, or anxious, it doesn't make me learn. It just makes me want to mask even further.
I never got a clear answer. Maybe someone has mastered this already. But it makes me think; if YOU, yes, YOU READING THIS IF IT APPLIES; If you are currently or have been EXTREMELY anxious, shy, awkward, cringe, and sensitive, how did you "fix" this issue? Did you simply embrace the cringe? And when you did, how did that go?
This is the only way, right? I can't see any other way. And does the cringe go away over time? There is this INNATE DESIRE to be hard on myself for interactions because somehow I think that makes me do better but all it really does is make me do worse. And I notice lots of people are like this. And it makes me wonder why do we do it if we know it makes no logical sense once you put it together? #relationships source
