Being good at chess does not mean you are super intelligent
I blame tv/movies, but plenty of people seem to think that if somebody is good at chess that they are automatically super intelligent. Or that any 8 year old kid who knows how to play chess is going to be the next version of Good Will Hunting.
Being able to see several moves ahead, or have several possible moves memorized, comes largely from experience in the game rather than raw intelligence alone.
Is there a link between chess skills and intelligence? Probably. But even then, there is probably a huge caveat. Are many intelligent people good at chess/are many good chess players intelligent? Sure, but it's not necessarily a *direct* correlation.
Somebody with a high IQ will not automatically be great at chess, and being great at chess does not automatically mean you are extremely intelligent. On a high level, it just means you are good/experienced at chess.
I like chess and enjoy playing from time to time. But I've met far too many people who have played for 6 hrs/day for the past 20 years and think they are Albert Einstein for beating everybody they play against. #conversation
