First country to visit in Central America?

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are going to a wedding near Mexico City next March and we want to add on what will be both of our first trip to Central America (besides a very brief trip to Belize). We are Canadian, late-20s, and have travelled Mexico fairly extensively due to having lots of Mexican friends and his parents living there. We’ve visited some not-so-safe areas of Mexico but always with locals/people that knew the area. I have some conversational spanish and he is fairly fluent in Spanish. We both love hiking/nature/surfing/snorkeling, love food and enjoy some nightlife, although nightlife is lower priority than the other stuff! We don’t do the all-inclusive thing, much prefer Airbnb or hotel/hostel where we can seek out our own food and experiences. We‘re currently focused on travel that is better without kids, since we do plan to have kids at some point and cross off some of the more family-friendly destinations at that point. We aren’t operating on a strict budget and can afford to travel wherever, however affordability is always a bonus!

All that being said, what would be your suggestion for first C.A country to visit, for around 5 days in March? My first thought was Costa Rica but I‘ve seen mixed reviews re. too touristy/being overrated. Both Guatemala and Nicaragua look cool, but I’m not clear on how safe/unsafe they are. Other suggestions/must-see spots are very welcome!
